A lot has been said about the passing of James Brown over the course of the last week, and I am certainly not the person to give a complete rundown of his innumerable accomplishments and vast level of influence on music as we know it today. If you have to ask who James Brown is, then you will never know.
What I will say is that James Brown has had a profound impact on me as the original architect of the funk. His level of innovation, in addition to his relentless work ethic, should serve as a model for artists both musical and otherwise.
Some 5 years ago, my brother finally gave in and hooked me up with a painting that he did of James Brown, after I had been asking him for several years. Here it is.
It inspired me to start a new line of portrait paintings that would set the course of my visual art work to this day, beginning with a rendition of the same classic JB photo, featured at the top of this post.
Thank you, Kid Dynamite, for everything.
Rest in peace. ©
