Acrylic on canvas
From the private collection of Stacy Wallen-McCarthy.
Olivia was painted for a friend Stacy upon the birth of her first child, Olivia.
I have legit memories going back to the time when I was around 4 or so...cruising around in the passenger seat of my mom's Camaro, listening to Fleetwood Mac. Before that though, I really wonder what kids see when they look up and see adults looking down at them. Seriously, we must look like monsters. When I first saw Olivia, I did what I always do when I see a baby - I made a funny face at the youngster and tried to crack her up. I don't know why I do this other than because maybe I am a clown, but it typically has the effect of either making the kid laugh or cry uncontrollably. Fortunately my crossed eyes, shaved head, and stuck-out tongue did not scare this chilling infant, who smiled big , pointed, and laughed - just like all of you should. When I look at this piece, I always see two big eyes, watching down.
The color scheme, in retrospect, is a little intense and dark for such a young audience.
This piece is currently residing in Stacy's bustling Beverly Hills office.
